Now you might think that is a very odd question. After all, who wouldn’t want to be fit and healthy. Who wouldn’t want to be in good shape both physically and mentally? Surely you would be crazy if you didn’t, wouldn’t you?

The truth is, we all know what to do. The reason we don’t, really is quite simple – we are just not ready for change.

It is thought that there are 5 stages the human brain goes through when it considers making changes –

1: PRE-CONTEMPLATION

This is the stage I like to call blissfully unaware. This is the stage where you are either in denial about the fact that you have a problem, or you don’t consider it to be serious, or you have tried so many times to make a change that you have given up trying, and it’s no longer even on your radar.

2: CONTEMPLATION

OK, so you appreciate you have a problem but at the moment you are weighing up the pros and cons of doing something about it. For example, you are thinking about the health benefits but offsetting that against the time it would take or the costs involved, or just the work you would have to do.

3: PREPARATION

You now have accepted your situation and you are happy to experiment with making some small changes.

4: ACTION

You have set all of your objections and excuses aside and you start taking some proper action.

5: MAINTENANCE AND RELAPSE PREVENTION

You are now striving to carry on with your new behaviors over the long term and make them into habits or a new lifestyle.

Where are you on this scale?

Think about it when considering a new fitness or weight loss program – once you identify where you currently, are then you can think about what you need to progress you to the next step.

The bottom line is always the same – when you ARE ready for change you will make it a priority.
